Rating System

All reviews and ratings of books are, of course, based on my personal enjoyment of, or connection to, a book. I will not connect to books some people connect to, and I will connect to books some people do not. In the case of poetry books, I don't think there is any "right" way to write poetry so long as it's cathartic for the author and there are people who can enjoy it, as there always are. For example, I tend to not enjoy poems that are written in that Instapoet format. At the same time, that kind of poetry is what got me into poetry in the first place. It's easy and accessible, and for that alone is admirable, even if I no longer enjoy that style of poetry. I prefer to read and write poetry that has set meter and rhyme schemes, but some people don't enjoy those. It's all preference.

It's part of the reason I created my own book log on my website instead of using apps like Goodreads — I want to provide my rating without worrying about said rating impacting the overall star rating for the book, especially for books without as many ratings.

Poetry

I do not think there is any "right" way to write poetry. So long as the poetry was cathartic for the author and there are people who can enjoy them, as there always are, then it's a good poem. In my opinion, at least. Poetry lacks the kinds of objective metrics that often exist in other genres. There are books I will connect to that others won't and vise verca.

I tend to not enjoy Instapoetry, even if the content is relatable. I prefer to read and write poetry that has set meter and/or rhyme schemes, but some people don't enjoy those. It's all preference. Instapoetry is, after all, what I started with when I got into poetry due to its accessibility, so I cannot pretend there is an objective element to things I used to enjoy as well.
